This book, ‘Defense of India Since Independence’, describes the
wars that India fought to defend itself against Pakistan and China. These
wars were: War with Pakistan in 1947-48 in Kashmir; 1962 War with
China in theNorth East Frontier Agency (NEFA), northeast of Assam
and in Ladakh north of Kashmir; 1965 War with Pakistan on the
western border; 1971 war with Pakistan on two fronts – west and east
-resulting in the creation of the new country of Bangladesh in east
and the 1999 Kargil War in the Kargil District of Jammu and Kashmir.
Apart from the above there were a few other small scale operations
that include the Goa Operations against Portuguese in 1961 and
‘Operation Polo’ to occupy the state of Hyderabad located within the
Indian Union in Deccan; Operation ‘Meghdoot’ the capture of Siachen
Glacier; Indian Peace Keeping Force in Sri Lanka and Operation Sindoor
against Pakistan

Major General R. S. Phagura is a second generation Defense Services officer. He is a veteran of wars with China in 1962 and with Pakistan in 1971. He has commanded a Mountain Division in the high altitude terrain on the Northern Border with China and a Mountain Brigade in counter insurgency operations in the North East. In the Desert environ, he has functioned as Deputy General Officer Commanding of an Infantry Division on the Western Border.
