Urban Indian Youth: Navigating Adulthood and Romance – A Social Work Perspective by Dr. Pooja presents a nuanced, research-driven, and socially grounded examination of how young people in urban India navigate adulthood and romantic relationships in an era of rapid transformation. Situated at the intersection of tradition and modernity, Indian youth today negotiate education, careers, family expectations, digital cultures, and intimate aspirations in complex ways. This book captures that lived reality with academic rigour and human depth.
The volume begins by highlighting why delayed adulthood and romantic relationships are significant in contemporary India. It situates “emerging adulthood” within the Indian socio-cultural context and presents empirical evidence on how youth perceive intimacy, commitment, and future planning. Moving beyond stereotypes, it reveals the nuanced ways in which romance unfolds—often quietly, sometimes rebelliously, and always within the layered frameworks of familial and social relationships.
Through a robust research blueprint and methodological clarity, the book examines socio-demographic backgrounds, family structures, and urban settings that shape youth experiences. It introduces a typology of romantic engagement and explores patterns of delayed commitment, highlighting how parental positions, peer groups, and media cultures influence choices, conflicts, and negotiations. The work also explores behavioural patterns and coping strategies adopted by young people across various temporal and situational contexts.
What sets this book apart is its grounding in social work values. The final unit offers thoughtful, practice-oriented insights for educators, counsellors, researchers, and policymakers. Rather than moralising or romanticising youth experiences, Dr. Pooja adopts a compassionate and evidence-based lens that respects agency while acknowledging vulnerability.
This book is an essential resource for students and practitioners of social work, psychology, sociology, and youth studies. It speaks equally to parents, educators, and anyone seeking to understand the inner worlds of urban Indian youth as they navigate love, identity, and the uncertain pathways to adulthood.”
